Before public outcry due to the discovery of benzene in soft drinks in the earl 1990s, prepared beverages were not regulated. They are still not widely held to the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, although benzene content is now regulated to 5 ppb.

I bring this up because the demonstrated synthesis of baclofen is enough to make four or five tablets (if you had the facilities to make tablets, that is). There may well be benefits to making such compounds at the point of delivery, but there are significant benefits to making them on scale, too. I note in passing that baclofen itself is available from at least 13 suppliers (although, to be sure, I don’t know if they’re all making it themselves).

The 3′ RACE system (Life Technologies Corp., Beijing, China) was carried out according the manufacturer’s protocol to obtain the 3′ end of the cytb gene in P. litchii (wild-type isolate 38). Nested amplification was performed, and primers GSP8 and GSP14 were used in the first round of PCR. Cycling parameters were 95 °C for 5 min; followed by 30 cycles of 95 °C for 30 s, 52 °C for 30 s, and 72 °C for 2 min; and a final extension of 10 min at 72 °C. The two pairs of primers GSP8/AUAP and GSP10/AUAP were used for the second round of PCR, with previous amplification products diluted 1000-fold as the template. The same reaction system and program were used as in the first round of PCR. Products of the expected size were separated, purified, sequenced, and analyzed as described above.

Experiments were performed using a multimode AFM equipped with a NanoScope IIIA controller (Bruker) operating in tapping mode; the NanoScope 5.30r2 software version was used. Si cantilevers (Bruker) were used with a force constant of 2.8 N/m and a resonance frequency of 75 kHz. The phase signal was set to 0 at a frequency 5 to 10% lower than the resonance one. Drive amplitude was 600 mV, and the amplitude set point Asp was 1.8 V. The ratio between the amplitude set point and the free amplitude (Asp/A0) was kept equal to 0.8.

And then to the content piece and wearables, going outside of smartphones, we of course expect smartphones for the foreseeable future to be people’s primary device. But where we’re making really strong progress is in areas like wearables, notebooks, and augmented realty, right? And so, in wearables and the notebooks, what we’ve done in both those areas is introduced using, our vapor deposition technologies, new composite materials that take our value on something like a wearable and a notebook up like a factor of five. And so, even outside smartphones, you see us playing the same basic approach, which is getting our new innovations adopted in those areas that also allow us to add value. Then you have entirely new device categories, like augmented reality, where you’re seeing the potential start to take shape for really significant innovation, and the vast new device category. But it’s soon, it’s too soon to get too excited about it. This is the time for all the positioning innovations and that’s something that years from now will offer a larger opportunity for us than what it is smartphones do today. But that’s gonna take a while to develop.
