Now, in any given quarter, things are gonna be impacted by the seasonality of our businesses, like it is in the first quarter, by the various mixes that we have in the businesses, but we’re happy with each of our businesses’ performances. They’re the best in the industries. And also, just the total impact of these investments. So, in Q1, you see some of these investments impacting us, but the main reason why Q1 is down versus Q4 is really the seasonality, not the investments.

That’s a tall order, and it’s worth remembering that it will only happen if there’s enough perceived utility and enough demand. Let’s go back to the chemistry, then, for another thought. What scale are these APIs being made on? The baclofen synthesis starts with 200mg the cinnamate and produces 98mg of API, and that seems to be what’s envisioned here:

(A) A cylindric polyimide sleeve was coated with the polymers (either PEA or PMA; the figure shows a picture of the sleeve and the coating is shown with a florescent dye) and implanted in a critical-size defect (2.5 mm) in a murine radius. Faxitron images show the evolution of the defect at different time points after implanting PEA coated with FN and BMP-2. The total amount of BMP-2 was ~15 ng. (B) Three-dimensional (3D) μCT reconstructions for both PEA and PMA polymers after 4 and 8 weeks, with three conditions: polymer only (PEA and PMA), FN coating on the polymer (FN), and FN coating on the polymer followed by BMP-2 adsorption (FN + BMP-2). The positive control is a PEG hydrogel loaded with ~175 ng of BMP-2. (C) μCT measures of bone volume within the defects. (D) Sections of 8-week radial samples stained with Safranin O/Fast Green. Arrow 1 shows the fibroblast-like morphology of cells. Arrows 2 and 3 show the new bone cells coming out of both distal and proximal sides. Secondly, historic foreign exchange hedging mechanisms that Superdry had put in place have not provided the same degree of protection as expected. This will lead to around £8m in additional foreign exchange costs, split evenly over the financial year.

In summary, 2018 was a terrific year. All of our businesses have strong momentum, and we expect another year of sales, gross margin, net income, and EPS growth in 2019. We expect 2019 gross margin dollars and percent to expand, due to the manufacturing capacity that came online in 2018, our improved utilization of that capacity, and the strength of our sales growth. The percentage increase will be somewhat muted due to our continuing investments in 2019 to meet committed demand for optical communications, GPF, and automotive glass. We expect to see the sales and margin benefit of these initial investments starting Q2, and build throughout the remainder of the year.

That paragraph (to my mind) is mixing two different things. Bench-scale synthesis of milligram amounts is (or can be) a very different thing than the synthesis of APIs that are out of production. Put simply, these reactors will need further work if they’re to be scaled up. As any industrial chemist knows, the procedures for mixing, heating and cooling, filtration, extraction, and transfer become quite different as you move to larger scales, and if you’re starting on the 200mg scale they’re going to become different pretty quickly. (That’s not to mention the likely need for a completely different model of 3D printer in order to make the reactors themselves). The paper does suggest using smaller reactors in parallel, although I should note that that complicates things under the current regulatory framework.

Display sales up 4%, as we ran our new Gen 10.5 facility. And annual price declines reached the important milestone of mid-single digits in the second half. And full year pricing was the best in more than a decade. Life Science sales up 8% as we continued to outpace market growth.
